Last day to Add or Drop

Remember that Add/Drop ends Tuesday, January 16, 2018.

N.B. If you change your schedule (You add a course, drop a course or swap courses.) it is always a good idea to PRINT your new schedule for your records.  It is not uncommon for a student drop a course and then be surprised at the end of the semester when he or she receives an F for that course.  This happens if the drop is not completed.  By printing your schedule you have confirmation that the drop went through plus a document should you need it for future reference.

Who is my Advisor?  (Really?)

For academic year 2017-2018 I have been reappointed the Faculty Academic Advisor.  I am usually here M-Th from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM.  If I am not teaching, I am generally available to meet with students.  However, I ask that you send me an email (harrisk@fiu.edu) with several times that work for you and then I will confirm one of them with you.

The best way to set one up is to email me:

Advising is by appointment.

By the Way:

Christina Abdelmalak in a professional advisor assigned temporarily to Philosophy until our department is assigned an official professional advisor.  However, essentially I am your academic advisor.  Ms Abdelmalak is very knowledgeable about student issues and also does pre-law advising.  She also has access to student record and student tracking systems that I do not have.  However, for the academic and curricular questions, in most cases it would be better for you to discuss them with me.

New Students and Freshmen:

Sometimes freshmen and new students think they need to wait until they have completed gen ed requirements, etc. before they see their major advisor.

No, no, no!  Nothing could be further from the truth.

I would be happy to meet with freshmen or any other new majors to talk about the major and other related topics such as:

·       FIU’s College of Law 3+3 opportunity Philosophy majors have to complete their Philosophy BA and the Law JD in a total of 6 (rather than 7) years

·       The specialized track options majors have

·       Internship opportunities, etc.

·       Future course selection

·       Plans for after graduation, etc.

Email me to set up a time.

Graduation:

If you plan to graduate this term, your Panther Degree audit should be completely clearing NOW!

I want to remind you that Friday, February 3rd is the last day to apply for Fall 2017 graduation as specified in the University Calendar. (Academic Calendar.)  If you wish to graduate this term, be certain to apply.

Here’s a link to FAQs:

Also, if you plan to graduate this term, your Panther Degree audit should be completely clearing NOW.  If there is any “red” on your degree audit at this point, that’s a problem.   Please address any gaps.  If you have questions about how to do this, please discuss this with me ASAP.

PHI4911 Senior Research Paper:

By now, you should already be registered for PHI4911 if you plan to graduate this term (unless of course you completed this requirement in a previous term).  You should also have confirmed with your faculty advisor how you will complete this requirement this term.  While I am the instructor of record, I do not assign the grade.  That is done by the faculty member with whom your work.

If you have any questions, please email me.
