Calculus II Schedule - Fall 2020

Last modified on

The schedule below includes your exams, homework (HW) due dates and a list of your daily HW exercises. The HW lists are minimal. You should normally do at least 50 per cent more to master each section. I may adjust some dates and content from time to time, but will also announce any major changes here and in class. I will post class news items here. You can print this page out, but be sure to check back regularly for updates.

General Information:  I have scheduled most of the quizzes, midterm exams and HW due dates on Thursdays, but HW 1 is due on Tuesday, Jan 14. Here is a fairly complete and stable HW List for the semester. I  normally include just a few a time here, with the next due date. Scroll down to see HW 1 and HW 2, which cover Ch.5 and Ch. 6.1. You will find Ch.5.1, problem 3 in your textbook (paper or electronic) and solve it on paper, showing all work. I expect you to do this, mostly alone, on Aug 25 after class. But you can do it at any time before the due date.

HW is due before class (to allow Q+A), on stapled looseleaf paper. Your grade may include neatness and organization. You should, for example, label the top of each page with the current section number, so we can find your work easily, and give you the credit you deserve. You can get help with similar problems, but do not copy from an answer key, the internet, etc. Show all your work !

The quizzes are approx 15 to 20 minutes, and will be announced in advance, probably along with some remarks about topics. The midterm exams are 100 miuntes each. You will find eventually find notes below about the sections covered, and any proofs/etc to study, which I will probably update a few days before the exam. Exams I and II (etc) may overlap slightly.

The first week(s): Prepare for the diagnostic quiz (Quiz 0) perhaps using my Review of Calc One webpage. Or see these Math Dept suggestions. Read Ch 5 and do HW 1, which is listed below. This is [so far] an in-person class from Aug 25 to December, with no zoom meetings or exams planned. Attend class, even if I do not take roll, and wear a mask, etc. Look over this website including the syllabus, my policies and the exam page. If you need special treatment - such as a certified disability, a religious holiday conflict, etc - see me ASAP. FIU usually requires me to report on attendance in the first weeks. If you can't be in class at normal times, see me. If you need to opt out of the HW, see me, email me, and get confirmation by Friday Aug 28. Check online that you are registered for this course.

If you purchased an access code, you can use the MyLabsPLus software, including the electronic textbook; see the syllabus if needed. But I do not require MLP and do not accept it as HW. If a HW exercise requires computing (unlikely), rhe MLP software may help, or you can try http://www.wolframalpha.com, which is free and easy. For example, type "plot z=x^2 +4y^2" and wait a few seconds.

Before Exam 1, finish reading Ch 5 and 6  and practice with True-False. You can surf online for practice with that. You can also find some of my old exams on my exam page. Look over the chapter review problems for Chs 5 and 6. Review HW 1 and 2, to make sure you learned enough from them. Most of the Exam I questions will resemble these exercises. If you do not feel you have mastered the material, ask for help and then do more problems as needed, preferably alone, with book closed. Learn the proofs listed below for Exam I (the list should be finalized by Week 2 or 3). A good proof includes words! The most common mistake with exam proofs is just not preparing. With some luck you should do OK by preparing well for perhaps 2 out of 3 proofs.

Exam I  may also have an easy question on "recent lecture topics" to check that you are keeping up. For Exam I, this probably means the Sept 10 lecture topics, which are not in HW 2. These topics will also be on Exam 2, and then I will expect greater skill. Remember to check back here a few days before the Exam for updates. If you need help, you should normally see me or the LA. Our dept site lists some other options. I often give a little extra credit for catching website errors, or for making some similar contribution to our world. Just email me, or stop by DM 419B.

If you are concerned about which answers need to be simplified, etc, see my grading policies, but it's not required reading, and not likely to affect your grades much.

Your Learning Assistant: Meet Melissa Venedicto and make a habit of seeing her every week or so with questions. Her email address and Zoom office hours are on your syllabus. You may also get a little extra credit, or other benefits, for attending regularly. If you want a group review session before the exam, ask her in advance.

Exam and Quiz Rules:  If you bring any electronic devices (such as cell phones, airbuds, calculators, etc), you must leave them with me before the exam. Keep your eyes and hands on your desk at all times. Barring freaky weather, no hats, hoodies or long sleeves are allowed. Seats may be assigned. No bathroom breaks. Arrive early if possible so we can settle and start on time. If you do not follow these rules you will get a zero. You may also face charges of academic misconduct and/or cheating. If you cannot follow these rules contact me at least 24 hours in advance to discuss.

Schedule for the first 4 weeks. We will cover approx 1.5 sections per day, in the same order as the textbook. You should do the related HW exercises asap after each lecture, on looseleaf paper, stapled and ready to turn in by 2pm on the due date.
