Your semester grade will be based on your average score - not on improvement, effort, etc. Incompletes will not be given, except in special cases such as last-minute medical emergencies. Percentages of course grade -

Quizzes, total = 10%
HW, total = 10%
Exams = 15% + 20% + 20% = 55%
Final Exam = 25%

Each student will have a score between 0 and 100 % at the end of the course, which determines the letter grade

 A 85-100%,   B 75-85 %,   C 65-75 %,   D 55-65 %, F 0-55 %.

(+'s and -'s may be used for grades above C). I will probably set a lower scale at the end of the semester, after all grades are in, especially if they are low. But not a higher scale. I will usually announce a new unofficial scale after each exam.

Learning Objectives: Calculus with more variables. This includes many topics you have seen in MAC 2311-12, such as limits, derivatives, integrals, volumes, surface areas, approximations, proofs and calculation of Work. See the HW page or the table of contents for more details. The successful student should be able to

Expectations
: The prerequisite for this course is Calculus II, MAC 2312, with a "C" or better. This includes some knowledge of polar coordinates, parametric equations and basic proofwriting. You are expected to spend at least 10 hours a week outside of class, on homework and reading the corresponding sections of the text. DO NOT fall behind! You are expected to ask questions in my office, after class, by email and/or with our LA. You are not required to use the MyLabsPlus software package (except perhaps to access the textbook) though it provides good additional practice. You will not be allowed any electronics during quizzes or exams. You may need to write basic proofs or learn ones from the textbook.

HW Policies:  There will be about 7  HWs. The following rules were written with paper in mind, but our LA may ask you to scan it to a pdf file instead, and then send it to her through email, which will speed up the grading. Do the problems by yourself and turn them in on  stapled loose leaf paper. For maximum credit be neat, show all your work, and explain your reasoning. Homework is due at the beginning of the class. Late homework (usually accepted up to 2 weeks late) is worth half the normal credit. Our LA will grade each HW package briefly, based mainly on a few selected problems. This may produce a few inaccurate weekly scores, but the HW averages at the end are usually accurate. If you feel otherwise at the end, you can bring all your HW back to me for review. Or, you can opt out of the HW entirely by email during the first week of classes (get my OK and save that email).

Each exam consists mostly of problems similar to the previous homework assignments and perhaps a conceptual problem, such as  True-False, a textbook proof and/or a definition. You can view my old exams on my Exam Page, though HW lists are generally a better way to study.

There will be about 2 to 4 quizzes mainly intended to give you a little extra early feedback. I expect these will take about 10 minutes each. I will briefly discuss their topics a few days in advance in class, or on the HW page.

The Main Rules (which can affect your grade):

Cell phones and other electronics must be turned off in class.
If you cannot arrive and leave on time, see me and explain.
If you miss a class, get notes from a classmate.
If you must miss an exam, see me beforehand, and/or document your excuse, to get fair treatment.
I don't generally give make-up exams, and very rarely give incompletes.
If you turn in homework late for a good reason, see me, and write a note of explanation at the top.
If you find a grading error, write a note to me at the top of your paper and return it promptly.
If you want to opt out of the HW, do so in the first week (see above).
Wear a mask and follow all other FIU rules for the covid era.

If you have Covid symptoms or special circumstances, contact me promptly. I may make exceptions to my rules. I will try to identify any cheating that may occur in the course. Show all your work, turn in any scratch paper you use in exams, and avoid sitting next to your study partners during exams. This covers the basics, but read over My Policies (the long version) so that you are not surprised by anything. I may inform your advisor if you fall behind, as part of FIU's "Early Alert" system.

Additional Exam / Quiz Rules:  If you bring any electronic devices (such as cell phones, airbuds, calculators, etc), you must leave them with me before the exam. Arrive early if possible so we can settle and start on time. Keep your eyes and hands on your desk at all times. Barring freaky weather, no hats, hoodies or long sleeves are allowed. Seats may be assigned. No bathroom breaks. If you do not follow these rules you will get a zero. You may also face charges of academic misconduct and/or cheating. If you cannot follow these rules contact me at least 24 hours in advance to discuss them.
