Maureen C. Kenny, Ph.D., NCC, LP is a Professor in the Department of Leadership and Professional Studies in the College of Education, at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. She received her BA in Psychology from Rutgers College and her MS and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Child Clinical Psychology. She has 20 years of experience in education, psychology and counseling. Since 1995, she has been teaching graduate courses in the Clinical Mental Health program at FIU. From 2005 to 2013, she served as Director of the graduate program in Counselor Education. Dr. Kenny is a licensed psychologist and qualified supervisor in Florida, a Nationally Board Certified Counselor and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.


Dr. Kenny has published over 54 articles in professional journals, 17 book chapters, presented at over 80 local, national and international conferences. She is the co- author of The Process of Counseling and Psychotherapy and more recently the editor of Sex Education: Attitude of Adolescents, Cultural Differences and Schools' Challenges . Her research has focused broadly on child abuse, sexuality education and cultural issues. Dr. Kenny has published extensively in the area of child abuse, particularly sexual abuse prevention and education as well as professionals’ compliance with child abuse reporting Dr. Kenny has secured close to $800,000 in funding to support community based efforts to educate minority youth and their families about sexual abuse. In addition, she has served as a consultant to Miami Dade county public schools to provide training related to sexuality education and sexual behavior in youth.


Dr. Kenny has received numerous awards from the Florida Psychological Association including: What A Woman Award (2009), Legislative and Public Policy Board Chapter Representative of the Year(2002), Outstanding Member Award, Child and Family Division of Florida Psychological Association (2000, 2014), Early Career Contributions to Psychology (1997),Creative Marketing Award (2000). In 2000, she received the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Nova Southeastern University. At FIU, Dr. Kenny has been recognized for her outstanding teaching and research records as the recipient of the Faculty Senate Teaching (2006) and Research Awards (2002). Dr. Kenny has served on the publications committee for the American Counseling Association. She was the secretary of the Florida Psychological Association and President of the Broward County Chapter.
