The Kitty Quilts - Suzanne Koptur's Quilts

Samurai on his quilt

When our mother got a kitten, it was like we had a new brother in the family.  A perfect occasion for a quilt!  When she was moving from Detroit to Olympia, Yolanda gave me her nice sewing machine to bring home to Miami.  I tested it out by working on this strip patchwork quilt while in Detroit.  It was received with pleasure by Samee when I completed it an brought it on a visit.  The back is a fabric with fall leaves, acorns, and squirrels, some of his favorite things.  He is shown here with his toy beaver, a finger puppet.  No catnip required!

I used the same fabrics to make another heart applique quilt, pieced by hand and then sewn together by machine, then quilted by hand.  It was made as a gift for our good friend Mary Ann, who loves cats and is our trusted cat caretaker when we travel away from home.  The stuffed animal cat is Ramon, a favorite of JJ's when he was young.
