Dr. Ritter's Policy on Incompletes

The Old Mathematics Department Policy on Incompletes
To: Mathematics Faculty and Adjuncts From: Dev Roy Subject: Incomplete Grades Date: August 22, 1989 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Please remember that a grade of Incomplete (IN) is to be given only under the following circumstances: 1. The student has substantially completed most of the course but is unable to finish an exam, project, program or other work because of circumstances beyond the student's control. 2. The student can complete all work by a specific date, normally during the next semester. Our departmental policy is that an IN grade is not given if it is necessary for the student to repeat the course, or for the purpose of allowing the student to sit in on your own or someone else's section in a subsequent term. If you do give an IN grade, a completed copy of the Form for IN Grades must be turned in when grades are submitted. It must indicate a firm deadline for the completion of the work. Although the University allows two semesters, it is common in our department to specify a deadline within the next term, often a few weeks or a month. Of course, the instructor is responsible for evaluating the completed work and then submitting a Change of Grade form. For a student who is not eligible for an IN under our guidelines, but who has legitimate health problems, change of work schedule, etc., there are other options. The student may appeal for a Withdrawal or a Late Drop through the Registrar's Office, although there is no guarantee that the appeal will be accepted. A student who receives a letter grade does have the option of repeating the course in a later term and then filing a repeated course form to the registrar. At that time, only the latest grade will count toward the student's GPA. Starting form Fall 1986, this option may be used only four times.
