    Important Information

    Policies

Please review the FIU's Policies webpage. The policies webpage contains essential information regarding guidelines relevant to all courses at FIU, as well as additional information about acceptable netiquette for online courses.

    Technical Requirements & Skills

One of the greatest barriers to taking an online course is a lack of basic computer literacy. By computer literacy we mean being able to manage and organize computer files efficiently, and learning to use your computer's operating system and software quickly and easily. Keep in mind that this is not a computer literacy course; but students enrolled in online courses are expected to have moderate proficiency using a computer. Please go to the "What's Required" webpage to find out more information on this subject.

This course utilizes the following tools:

    1) Adobe Connect
    2) MyLabsPlus (listed under Pearson MyLab/ Mastering on the link below)

Please visit our Technical Requirements webpage for additional information.

    Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

    Proctored Exam Policy

Students in South Florida will take these tests on FIU's MMC campus (the dates and times are below). Students outside South Florida must find a school, community college, or university in their locale where a proctor can administer the test on the same day (not necessarily at the same time) and fax or email the completed test to me. This site may help you find a testing center outside South Florida. I can also assist you in finding an acceptable proctor.

On test days, attendance is required. There are NO MAKEUP TESTS. If you miss a test and, in the opinion of the instructor, the absence is excusable, your final exam will count as two grades. If the absence is not excusable, you will receive a zero on the test missed. Be prepared to document your excuse with a traffic ticket, hospital bill, arrest form, etc. A doctor's note is not acceptable unless it says "(student's name) was unable to attend school on (date of test)." Tardiness is permitted on test days without penalty although you will have less time on the test than everyone else. If you are so late that someone has already turned in their test before you arrive, you will not be allowed to take the test.

NOTE: If you see a note posted saying that a test is canceled, make sure it is on FIU stationary and wait until the starting time of class before leaving.

All tests must be written using pencil. A calculator with a square root button is required. Graphing calculators are prohibited on tests.

Cell phones must be turned off during tests. The vibrate mode is not considered turned off. Cellular phones must not be visible to you or me. If they are on your belt, they are visible. If they are in your book bag or pocket, they are not. Violations of this policy will result in you having to put the cell phone in the hallway immediately outside the class. If you are afraid it will be stolen, you may choose to leave with it, but you will not be readmitted to the test and all unanswered test questions will be marked wrong.

    Textbook (3 options)

    1. If you are OK with not having a hard copy of the text, you may purchase access to MyLabsPlus, which includes an electronic copy of the text.

    DROPS AND TUTION

DROPS are not initiated by Prof. Rosenthal. If you stop attending, you must drop this class yourself to avoid a grade of F. The deadline for dropping classes with a grade of DR is Nov. 3.

EXTRA TUITION CHARGES FOR REPEATED COURSES AND EXCESS HOURS: The Florida Legislature has mandated a tuition surcharge for the third time a student either takes or attempts a college credit course. This charge should serve as additional motivation for you not to have to retake this course. In other words, DO THE HOMEWORK!!!

    ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT

Academic Misconduct includes (but is not limited to) giving or receiving assistance on a test, quiz, or homework assignment for which such assistance is not permitted, falsifying a document to obtain an excusal from a test, and using unauthorized notes on a test or quiz. A more complete definition of Academic Misconduct is given here. Penalties for Academic Misconduct range from an F in the course to expulsion from the university.

    Expectations Of This Course

This is an online course, which means most (if not all) of the course work will be conducted online. Expectations for performance in an online course are the same for a traditional course. In fact, online courses require a degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and technology skills which can make these courses more demanding for some students.

    Students are expected to:

      • Review the how to get started information located in lesson 0
      • Introduce yourself to the class during the first week by posting a self introduction in the appropriate discussion forum
      • Interact online with Prof. Rosenthal and your peers
      • Review and follow the course calendar
      • Log in to the course 4 times per week
      • Respond to emails within 1 day
      • Submit MyLabsPlus homework by the corresponding deadline

    The instructor will:

      • Log in to the course 14 times per week
      • Respond to discussion board postings within 1 day
      • Respond to emails within 1 day
      • Grade tests within 1 week of the test date

    Course Detail

    Course Communication

Communication in this course will take place via email and the discussion forum. Lesson 0 will explain when each should be used.

Emails are sent to the students’ FIU email on record. The Email tool is located on the Course Menu, on the left side of the course webpage.

    Discussion Forums

Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post. Use the discussion board to post questions that would be of interest to your classmates, such as questions about how to do a homework problem. Lesson 0 will explain how to write an appropriate subject line for homework questions.

    HOMEWORK

There are two types of homework in this class, online homework from the MyLabsPlus web site and offline homework from the text. Only the online homework counts toward your homework grade. You will still have to do the assigned offline homework from the text to be adequately prepared for my tests. Offline homework is not turned in and you are responsible for checking your answers to make sure you are doing them correctly. For the MyLabsPlus homework, please pay attention to the due dates listed on the MyLabsPlus web site. There are no extensions on due dates; don't even ask! Don't wait until the day the homework is due to do it, because if your Internet connection goes out, you are out of luck.

    ADOBE CONNECT

Adobe Connect is an online meeting room where you can interact with your professor and fellow students by sharing screens, sharing files, chatting, broadcasting live audio, and taking part in other interactive online activities. We will be utilizing this tool to conduct office hour and student-initiated study groups.

Office hours will be announced on Blackboard.

    Requirements for using Adobe Connect:

    1. Disable any window pop-up blocker.
    2. Adobe Flash Player is required to successfully run your Adobe Connect meeting. You can test your computer to make sure your computer and network connections are properly configured to provide you with the best possible Adobe Connect meeting experience.
    3. Use of a combination headset and microphone with USB connection is recommended to ensure quality sound and reduce technical difficulties

Reference Adobe Connect (Tutorials & Help) to learn about the tool, how to access your meeting rooms and recordings.

    Grading

Tests 1-3 will each be worth 20% of your grade, the MyLabsPlus homework will be 15% of your grade and the cumulative final exam will be 25% of your grade.

Course Requirements Number of Items Points for Each Weight
    Tests 3 100 20% each
    Final Exam 1 100 25%
