MAD 4203 U01   Fall 2018

The course will be taught by Dr. Dev K. Roy, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:25 to 7:40 p.m.   The classroom is PC 211 on Tuesdays and GC 285 on Thursdays.  Combinatorics is a field of Mathematics with many interesting and enjoyable problems, many of which are grouped so as to provide uniform methods to answer what seem like completely dissimilar questions.  Frequently ideas which start as fun problems lead to deep theoretical ideas and far-ranging applications.

All students are required to have completed the prerequisites (MAC 2313 or both MAC 2312 and MAD 2104) with  grades of C or higher.  Anyone who has not satisfied the prerequisites should drop the class immediately or see the instructor for special permission.

Instructor information:  Dr. Dev Roy, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, DM 410A; 305 348 2926; royd at fiu.edu.  Office hours from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. in DM 410A on TR, as well as some time after 7:40 p.m., usually by appointment, primarily for students in MAD 4203.

Course information:   Attendance in class is required. The textbook is the 5th edition of "Introductory Combinatorics" by Brualdi.  We will cover selected material from chapters 1-9.  There will be three exams, including a comprehensive final exam.  These will determine 90% of the course grade.  The remaining 10% will be determined by homework.  Exam dates and the drop date are given below.  There are various sources of help for the class.  These include my own office hours, discussion in class, and possibly some  tutoring services.  Information about these will be provided in class.   Course grades of C, B, and A correspond to average, good, and excellent work.  The exams are made up so that percentage scores in the range [80,100] conform to the A range, [70,79] to the B range, and [60,69] to the C range.

Exams:  Dates are given below.  All exams will be closed book, and students will be expected to bring an official photo id to exams.  Bathroom breaks must be taken before the exam is started.
