MAP 2302 U06   Fall 2018

The course will be taught by Dr. Dev K. Roy, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6:15 p.m.   The classroom is PC 211 on Tuesdays and GC 285 on Thursdays.  Differential equations are a highly applicable subject; in addition to a rich history in theory and mathematical applications, they enjoy widespread use in other  sciences, engineering, medicine, economics, and many other fields.  This course is a first course in ordinary differential equations.  All students are required to have completed the prerequisite course (Calculus II) with a grade of C or higher.  Anyone who has not satisfied the prerequisite should drop the class immediately or see the instructor for special permission.

Instructor information:  Dr. Dev Roy, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, DM 410A; 305 348 2926; royd at fiu.edu.  Office hours from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. in DM 410A on TR, as well as some time after 7:40 p.m., usually by appointment, primarily for students in MAD 4203.

Course information:  Attendance in class is required.  The textbook is the 4th edition of "Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations" by Shepley Ross.  We will cover material from chapters 1-6 and 9.  There will be three exams, including a comprehensive final exam.  These will determine 90% of the course grade.  The remaining 10% will be determined by homework.  Exam dates and the drop date are given below.  There are various sources of help for the class.  These include my own office hours, discussion in class, a teaching assistant, and various tutoring services.  Information about these will be provided in class.   Course grades of C, B, and A correspond to average, good, and excellent work.  The exams are made up so that percentage scores in the range [80,100] conform to the A range, [70,79] to the B range, and [60,69] to the C range.

Exams:  Dates are given below.  All exams will be closed book, and students will be expected to bring an official photo id to exams.  Bathroom breaks must be taken before the exam is started.
