Description: A one semester introduction to the basic notions of calculus. Specific topics include: Differential calculus using polynomial, exponential and logarthmic functions and its application to optimization; integral calculus with area and probability applications.

Prerequisite: MAC 2132 (Precalculus mathematics) or working knowlege of algebra.
Text and Technology: Calculus Concepts, 3rd edition, by Latorre, Kenelly, Fetta, et al. A graphing calculator is required for this course. We recommend students to purchase a TI 83 or TI 84 Plus calculator.

Material to be covered: Sections 1.4, 2.1, 2.3--2.5; 3.1--3.5; 4.2--4.5; 5.1--5.3; 6.1, 6.2, 6.4 and 6.5; 7.2, 7.3; 9.1, 9.2; 10.2.

Tests and quizzes:

  • There will be two (2) midterms, worth 100 points each. The dates are February 16 and April 6.
  • Final: A mandatory comprehensive, final exam will carry 150 points. The date and time are Tu, April 25, 2006: 1825-2105
  • Quizzes: Five (5) quizzes; Dates (may be changed as needed): 01/19, 02/2, 03/2, 03/16 and 04/20. Each is worth 10 points.
  • Grades: Grades will be assigned on the basis of 400 points.
