Research Interests

I direct a program of NIMH-funded research that examines mental health promotion for families living in urban poverty through capacity building in the natural, neighborhood settings that support them. I collaborate with partners in schools and after school programs and with colleagues in education, public health, social work, organizational psychology, and school psychology to develop and test models of community mental health practice that build on the strengths, respond to the needs, and respect the constraints of children’s service settings. I have14 years of experience with children’s mental health services research in high poverty, urban settings, and experience collaborating with community based organizations in both African American and Latino neighborhoods, which has enhanced my appreciation for some of the unique strengths and common challenges as well as several important distinctions regarding history and patterns of mental health service utilization. Together, my studies reflect the overall goal of my work to strengthen capacity of non-specialty settings to minimize risk for mental health problems among children and families living in urban poverty.
