Textbook: Applied Linear Algebra by Lorenzo Sadun, ISBN 0-13-085645-2

Instructor: Tedi Draghici

Method of Evaluation: Your final grade in the course is based on:

  1. Homework: 100 points. These will be announced in class and on the course website. Late homework may be accepted, but with possible deductions.
  2. Midterm exam: 100 points  TBA;
  3. FINAL EXAM: 150 points TBA.

Grade-scale: The following percentages will guarantee the associated grade:

 > 90: A 80-85 : B 65-75 : C < 50 : F

 88-90 : A- 78-80 : B- 55-65 : D

 85-88 : B+ 75-78 : C+ 50-55 : D-

NO MAKEUP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. If you have a documented medical or professional excuse for missing the midterm, that percentage of your grade may be made up on the final.

Expectation: I expect you to have a good feel for manipulating matrices, especially row reduction, but also taking determinants. Please review the appendix of this book ASAP. I will also leave a copy of Steven Leons Linear Algebra book in DM 416. You can consult it there, but dont take it away from that area. I expect you to have seen abstract vector spaces and linear transformations, but some rustiness is acceptable -- we'll be reviewing that (at a fast pace though). We will cover eigenvalues and eigenvectors in detail;

ok, if you have not seen anything about them prior to this course. You are expected to have a reasonable maturity in conceiving and writing mathematical proofs.

Attendance: I dont take attendance, but I hope you will find it useful to be in class. Try to arrive and leave on time.

Drop deadline: Monday, June 10.

Tentative schedule: We will cover most of Chapters 1-7 + eventual handouts.
