MAC 2313- Calculus III  Spring 2017

M1000-1130AM, W1000-1150, F1000-1130 in Stud. Acad. Succ. Center 202.

Course objectives: the students will learn how to extend the ideas of Calculus 1 and Cal. 2 to a multivariable setting. They will learn the various concepts of derivative for functions of several variable, and how to compute multiple integrals. They will acquire some ability to understand the geometry of objects in 2 and 3 dimensions that are defined by mathematical equations. They will learn to apply the computational tools to solve various problems that emerge from physics, and also other sciences and economics. They will acquire some skill in abstract computations, derivation of formulas, and logical proofs.

Textbook: Calculus with early transcendentals, by Anton, Bivens, and Davis, 10-th edition.

Contents: by book: Ch. 11, 12.1-12.4, Ch.13, 14.1-14.7, Ch. 15.  Suggested homework assignments  will be recorded on the website. Pre-requisite: Grade C or better in Calculus II.

Special feature of class: this class has an extra hour per week so that students in groups can work on a worksheet in class once per week. This worksheet will be graded.

Grading scheme:

Four quizzes worth 4% each. Schedule: 1/27 (revised), the following dates are tentative: 2/22 , 3/22, 4/5

Weekly worksheets, worth a total of 10%.

Three tests held in class: Test schedule: (tentative) 2/8, 3/8, 4/19, worth 16% each

Cumulative final exam:  Final exam will be in regular classroom, is worth 26%, held on Monday, April 24 945-1145AM.

The grading scale goes as follows: 80-100\%=A, 70-79\%=B,60-69\%=C, 50-59\%=D, 0-49\%=F.

Drop deadline: Monday, March 20.

Expectations: The prerequisite for this course is Calculus 2, MAC 2312, with a "C" or better. This includes good knowledge of trig identities and derivative formulas, and good skills in integration

You are expected to spend about 10 hours a week outside of class, on homework and reading the corresponding sections of the text. DO NOT fall behind! Remember: the best way to learn mathematics is to DO mathematics, ie. do the homework problems. Also, the worksheets are meant as a supplement to homework, NOT as a substitute.

You will need to visit various pages in this website, mainly to get the HW assignments.

You will be expected to write a few proofs on exams, with clear sentences and good explanations. Most of these will be explained in class and in the text, with some warning before the exam.

The material gets more complex towards the end, so you should expect to work harder towards the end.

Attendance:
Optional except on test days. However, in my experience the vast majority of students who don't attendance class do poorly on the exams. Also, the worksheets, which are done in class, are for credit. If you miss a quiz/test, and in my opinion your absence is excusable, then your final exam will be adjusted to make up. If you miss a worksheet and the absence is excusable, your worksheet grade will be an average of the other worksheets. If the absence is not excusable, you get 0 on the missed test. Be prepared to document your excuse with doctor's note, etc. You are responsible for any work covered in class, unless told otherwise.

Drop deadline: Monday Nov. 4. Remember, if you stop attending classes and don't wish to get an F, you must drop by this date.

Topics to be covered: Most of chapters 11-14. Suggested homework assignments will be given at the end of each class and will be recorded on the website. You have to check the web page often for updates, including changes of test dates, etc. You are expected to spend a minimum of 10 hours a week outside of class on homework and reading the corresponding sections of the text.

Extra help

Extra help is available in various forms; see http://casgroup.fiu.edu/MathStatistics/pages.php?id=1161

We also have  LA's for this class, . They are there to insist you on the group work sessions we will have in class.

The instructor reserves the right to make any changes he considers academically advisable. These eventual changes would be announced in class and you are responsible to be aware of them.

Extra tuition charges for repeated courses and excess hours. The Florida Legislature has mandated a tuition surcharge for the third time a student takes or attempts a college credit course. Also, students who attempt more than 115\% of the hours required in their degree program will pay 150% of their normal tuition. For more information of these charges, including a possible appeal of the surcharge, see pages 3,4 of the Class Schedule booklet. These charges should serve as additional motivation for you to pass the course. In other words, do your homework.

Cancelled classes: if you see a note posted saying that class is cancelled, make sure it is on FIU stationery and wait till the beginning of class before leaving.I
