Laboratory Policies:
· Lab coat and closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Students coming to the lab without the required attire will not be allowed into the lab.
· Cell phone use is strictly prohibited during class
· Food and Drinks are not allowed in the lab.
· Your laboratory workbench must be clean and sterilized with all instruments put away in their proper place at the end of class! Failure to do so will result in a 2pt deduction from your lab grade.
· Waste and dirty glassware must be place in their appropriate containers by the end of the lab. Ask your TA, if not sure what to do.
· Make your TA aware of any spills or injuries immediately.
· If you suffer any medical conditions that compromised your immunity please inform your TA.
· Students with disabilities who may need accommodations for this class must notify the TA and contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) early in the semester so that appropriate services can be implemented.
· Lab reports are due on the assigned date. Late reports will not be accepted without a valid, documented excuse.
· You must notify the TA, in writing, at least 2 weeks in advance, if you wish to observe a religious holiday; however you will still be responsible for the material missed.
· DO NOT talk during the lecture time. This time is limited and you will not only miss important points or instructions but will also disturb those classmates that are interested in the information given.
Grading Policies:
1. Laboratory attendance is mandatory. Unexcused absences will result in a zero on missed lab reports and quizzes. Being late 3 times is equivalent to 1 unexcused absence, and will result in a 10% deduction off the final grade.
2. The structure of the lab experiments does not allow for “make-up” labs. Do not schedule doctor/dentist appointments and/ or trips during class time, as these are not considered valid excuses to miss a lab or quiz.
3. Students must download and print out Experiments from the class website each week before coming to class. Download the Lab Manual.
4. Exams and lab reports will be graded and the results will be returned to students the following lab period.
5. Final grades will be based on a standard 10-point scale grading system with no + or - grades assigned.
6. CHEATING or PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! Students caught cheating during a quiz or examination or plagiarizing when writing their lab report (copying from another student’s lab report) will be given an "F" for the course.
7. Late work will be subjected to a 10% mark off the graded quality of the late assignment.
8. There will be 10 quizzes during the course. The quiz will be administered at the beginning of each class on the material from the previous and current lab. MAKE SURE TO READ THE LAB ASSIGNMENT/S BEFORE THE LAB PERIOD.
9. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP QUIZZES!!! All quizzes will be given at the very beginning of class. If you miss a quiz due to an emergency, you must contact me via E-mail or a phone message. You will be asked to provide a written excuse (doctor's note, accident report, etc.) before a missed quiz will be forgiven.
Grading Breakdown:
*Lab Reports. There will be 10 lab reports during this semester. Each lab report will count for 10 points. The lab reports will be based on experiments performed during lab and will be due at end of the lab. All laboratory reports are to be written individually! They must be legible and neat (if we can’t read it, we can’t grade it). Plagiarizing is unacceptable!
* Each quiz will count for 10 points. If you are not present at the beginning of class you will miss the quiz. No makeup quizzes!!!
* Final Exam. One cumulative laboratory practical will be given during the last laboratory class. The final will be worth 100 points.
Grades will be administered according to the standard grading scale: 90%-100% = A, 80%-89% = B, 70%-79% = C, 60%-69% = D, <60% = F
Grade distribution will be as followed: 50% Lab Reports, 20% Quizzes, 30% Final Exam
There will be no extra credit!!
