Title: Wonderful Memories of Jane Harris! Medium: Photographic Collage Dimensions: 8” x 10” Artist: Sandy Levy Price:
NFS I
have gifted this print to Kenton Harris. |
I realized late that the artist friends of
Jane were invited to exhibit at HARRISART on Saturday February 15. I decided to put together a collage of some
photographs showing the good times that Barbara and I had with Jane and
Kenton. There were hundreds of images
from which to choose, and selection was therefore quite difficult. I settled on these, however this collage
could have been made In dozens of different configurations, and each version
would have been equally charming. I
hope these photographs bring a smile to the viewer’s faces, as they have done
with Barbara and me. |

Title: Personage 6- "La Chismosa" Medium: Mixed Media on Canvas Dimensions: 30" x 40" Artist: Maruchi Carmona Price: $2,500 |
Maruchi explained
to me that she paints persons. People
she knows or knew. But more precisely,
she paints spirits. When Jane visited Maruchi at her studio and saw this painting Jane said,
“Oh that one's nosey.” This is why the
artist named the painting "La Chismosa." When later Jane exhibited the painting at a
gallery showing in this space, Jane placed it in proximity to a sculpture and
which the painted figure seemed to be staring intently. Nosey indeed. |

Title: The Birdman Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Dimensions: 11" x 14" Artist: MANO Price: |
The first time I visited Jane in her studio
in the Bird Road Art District she was painting beautiful botanicals with
painstaking details in a small room in the front part of her studio, but in
the back of the house she was developing a series completely different in
style and technique, loose, exciting black birds were taking flight across
her canvases. We talked about the birds as a metaphor for so many things but
mostly freedom and why perhaps the Bird Road Art District was named after the
birds if that. Apparently we both loved to incorporate the black bird in our
work and we bonded over this and so many other things. When Jane first visited my studio I showed
her the Birdman, she loved it and years later it formed part in one of the
last group shows that curated. At the time that Jane moved into the Bird Road
Art District many artists were involved in Free Art Fridays, an interesting
movement where artists leave their artwork out around town and provide clues
via a FB page the art is free to whoever finds it. Jane loved this idea and
started working on sets of black birds depicted on small canvases. I’m not
sure if I am the only person who ever found her blackbirds, but I was lucky
to find three small canvases 2" x 3" each carefully hidden in front
of the post office on Bird Road. I was also lucky not to be arrested by a
police officer who was watching me search through the bushes and asked what I
was doing. Jane met many people through Free Art Fridays
and collaborated with members on different themed Fridays. I remember her
working with Barbara de Varona to develop the theme
of "Put A Bird on it" which turned that month’s art walk into a
scavenger hunt. I know that Jane loved many things... among
them black birds. MANO |

Title:
Sunflower Field April 2018 Medium:
Acrylic on Arches paper Dimensions: 13” diameter image (19.25" x
19.25" framed) Artist: Miguel Rodez Price:
NSF (In a private collection) |
Among the last of Jane's inspiring art series
was a collection that recalled Vincent Van Gogh's sunflowers. I was fortunate
to see Jane in the process of painting some of the sunflower pieces that
formed part of that collection. Although she was aware that I also painted
flowers she never got to see my Sunflower Field. Although it now forms part
of a private collection, it still reminds me of Jane whenever I see it. |

Title: H2O Medium: Photography Dimensions: 32 x 22 Artist: Hector Gonzalez Price: $300 |
This piece appeared in the first exhibition
that I did that Jane attended. Jane
liked it. The exhibition was part of a TA project. |

Title: Extraordinary Women Medium: Mixed media on a broken door Dimensions: 24x36 in Artist: Maria Patino 2017 Price: $900 |
This
piece was created from a broken door given to me by Jane during those long
visits to her studio. I saw the broken door on the side of her studio and I
inquired about it, she said “take it”! Is yours! Then she went on to tell me
about it. I
asked her if she had any plans for it, but she continued to tell me to take
it. I then went to work on it right away. I turned it into an installation
piece honoring all my female ancestors, all the women that have contributed
to my spiritual and creative growth. |

Title: Hello world Medium: Mixed media and collage on a discarded book Dimensions: 9x6x2 Artist: Maria Patino 2019 Price: |
I would also like to participate with my altered book I was working on last year. The moment I found out Jane had passed away I spent many hours thinking on her and all the memories we had together. The spread here, became the artwork I did the same day I found out she had passed. Living through this experience and letting go of Jane brought me back memories of my mother’s death from colon cancer. I’m grateful for having the opportunity to meet Jane. She touched my life in many ways. She would always have a place in my heart. |

Title:
Jane Doe: Lost & Found, 2018 Medium:
Mixed media on canvas board Dimensions: 12.5 in x 17 in x 2.75 in Artist:
Jean Blackwell Font Price: $750 |
JN was always bringing me materials to work
with. I didn’t always know what to do with the things she brought me, but I
always was happy to receive them. Anytime I had a chance to visit with her
and talk with her, I was happy for the opportunity. One day I was working on an idea for a piece
and I mentioned that I needed an old wedding ring for this particular work.
It was going to be based on a story that I was told about something that
happened to my mother when I was very young: the day my mother disappeared. She suffered from mental illness, and it
wasn’t the first or the last time that she would vanish. Eventually, the
police found my mother: no identification, no personal items, and her wedding
band was gone. Fortunately, she was alive and well but she did not know who
she was. The police eventually returned my mother to
her husband, my dad. The story haunts me. I shared the story with Jane as I
was working it out in materials. The next day, Jane left a tiny little plastic
bag filled with miscellaneous objects. In that bag she included a little ring
that had lost its stone. She later confessed to me that that ring was her
first promise ring. It meant so much to me, and that ring is a key element in
the work which can be seen in the lower right hand corner of the artwork. It
is titled Jane Doe: lost and found. Jane‘s name is included on purpose, and
was built into the title because of her important contribution and support of
my work. |

Title: Violets Are Blue Medium: Acrylic on Gallery-wrapped canvas Dimensions: 20" x 20" x 1-1/2 Artist: Carol Gregoire Price: $1000 |
I mostly do expressive landscapes and
flowers, although I have not done any sunflowers, mostly because I probably
could not do them justice like Jane did.
We share the love of nature and books. I
chose this piece because the title signifies how we feel when we lose
someone. |

Title: Miranda’s Heads Medium: Mixed Media on Paper Dimensions: 30” x 22” Artist: Maria Sonia Martin Price: 1800 |
There is a very obvious correlation to a
woman's body and the perils of cancer treatment, the three women's head, bodies refer to the 'numbers'... of afflicted women that
have suffered such maladies. |

Title:
Untitled (3) 2016 Medium:
Collage/Mixed Media Dimensions: 7” X 5” Artist: Antonio Gonzalez-Nuñez
Price: $75 Each |
These collages are a connection between Jane
and me because we both loved birds. The subject became a joke because she always
made a reference to birds in every work that I did, even when I was not
representing them in my work. She would say: "Of course it's a
bird". I found birds in her works too and that
became a mutual "game" in finding each other our involuntary
tendency toward those feathered creatures. She was them talking about her
plans about doing a show with 'Birds" as a theme. Finally that was the
catharsis for her and me. |

Title: Little Shaman (2016) Medium: Oil on Canvas Dimensions: 16” X 12” Artist: Liliana Leiro Price: $300 |
This is the portrait of what I imagine a
young Shaman looks like..., engaged, sagacious, all embracing. Jane had all
these qualities and more. She lovingly embraced us all under her caring tent. |

|
Title: Kanisha Medium: Mixed Media Dimensions: 14” x 17” Artist: Macarena Zilveti Price: $500 |
When I was ready to take this series to
canvas, Jane came to mind. I had always admired her art and I knew she would
give me her honest, professional opinion. I called and asked if she could
meet with me and I'd explain my vision to her. We met for hours in her studio
as she listened and gave me advice. I will always treasure that time spent
together, as we talked about our childhoods, commiserating about life and
art. |

Title: The Corset Medium: Photo Dimensions: 20” x 26” Artist: Rosee Camafreita Price: |
“The Corset” was Jane’s favorites from the
exhibit “Drive by Shooting and Walkabout Snapshots” with Ali Miranda. |

Title: ALL YOU
NEED IS LOVE Medium: Ink on Wood Dimensions: 9”x14” & 14”x9” Artist: Joan Futscher Price: |
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE Jane and Kenton opened this studio in 2013
after Jane had retired from her position as Head of the Art Department and
beloved Art instructor at La Salle High School. Kenton is my brother and Jane
my close friend and a mentor to my creative leanings, they graciously invited
me to take part in this artistic endeavor and to be a helpful assistant due
to a very bad home accident in which Jane had incurred several injuries
including a broken arm, badly dislocated shoulder, and a knee injury. This
accident hastened her retirement from La Salle, but Jane had much she still
wanted to do, and so this studio space came to be. Kenton was very busy as
Dean of Students and teaching professor of Philosophy at FIU, so he would be
glad there was someone here with Jane while he worked and she developed the
space into a working studio. What a gift to me!! Daily working with a
knowledgeable, experienced, accomplished, excessively talented and rather
deep and thoughtful woman/friend almost every day for almost 3 years! I am so grateful - especially for many good
memories together, she gifted me with seeing through her eyes, how to let art
lead me through hard places that I didn't have words for only shapes and
colors - and the acceptance that that was enough for now. These small paintings of 2 birds on wood are
reminiscent of those quietly productive days when we had settled into working
on a particular piece or project with sporadic sessions of conversation about, oh...everything. Our thoughts often led us back to the
realization that people need each other, whether building or being a part of
a community if we had expectations of success or just the completion of a
worthy goal. The habits and traits of birds are a fine
example (for me at least) of the characteristics we pondered and tried to
emulate in order to shape our microcosm here at her studio and be productive
in a positive way both privately and professionally. Making plans, using
foresight in finding advantageous opportunities or to avoid those errors in
judgment that can be devastating to projects that include other artists that
we wanted to include and/or work with. We wanted to work together within
established foundations and not be isolated (that's more my modus operandi,
NOT Jane's ). And we had the joy of expectation,
anticipation of being included in other shows, being able to nurture each
other while waiting for progress or not seeing our own progress, or doubting
ourselves and our own progress and merit. Thank you Jane and Kenton, my tears are of joy as much as of sorrow. Your heart lives in my heart - Forever. God willing my actions will hold an echo of
your fabulous essence. Joan Futscher |

Title: Tribute to Jane Harris Medium: Collage on paper Dimensions: 8"x10" Artist: Linda Faneuf Price: $300 |
Jane met Linda decades ago when the two of them were pioneering artists in the new-formed fledgling South Florida Art Center on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. They remain friends and productive artists here in South Florida. In October of 2018, Jane featured Linda’s work here in a show entitled: Gladys Crosses the Causeway. I believe that this was the last formal exhibition that Jane launched. It was very successful and Jane could not have been more pleased. |

Title: Shitbucks Medium: Colored Pencil on Paper Dimensions: 9” x 11” (Framed) Artist: Bill Amundson Price: NFS |
Bill Amundson is a Wisconsin native and made
a name for himself as a successful and prolific artist while living in
Colorado for 35 years. Jane and I came
to know Bill when he met and married Jane’s sister, Anita James. Jane loved Bill’s work, not only his
mastery of technique but his wry and quirky sense of visual humor, not unlike
Jane’s own. Jane acquired this piece
as a gift for me and I have displayed in my office ever since. |

Title:
Once Upon A Tail Medium: Merino Wool,
Tussah Silk, Wet Felted Dimensions:
25” x 18” Artist: Sharon Spaker
Price: $300 To be donated to the Ovarian Cancer Research
Alliance (OCRA) |
Dear Kenton, Jane was so kind and encouraging to me in my
felting. The Fiber Optics show orchestrated by Jane of the three novice
artists was, I dare say, a milestone for each of us. I would like to rework a
piece that Jane excepted for that show ( now that I
know more). You probably won’t recognize the felt but I know that the green
felt scraps which Jane “found” when you both were at our house for dinner
continued to pop up in the studio for a long time after. So like her to
collect the scraps and encourage the maker. I will measure the piece which I now would
hang, with a picture of the original showing. I miss our chats. Jane was a wonderful
friend. All my best to you, Sharon

Title: Loving Jane Medium: Photo Dimensions: 11” x 14” (Matted) Artist: Ana Maria Sarlat Price: Priceless |
A
portrait of Jane photographing a natural ephemeral work of art in her Honor
and this is my portrait of her... it is something I for made her on a rainy
day with found objects and she was very surprised when she opened her door of
her studio and found the gift stuck to her car window. Then she started photographing it and I
took the shot. It’s a forever heart. |

Title:
Gull in Flight Medium:
Photography Dimensions:
8” x 10” Artist: Sandy Levy Price:
NFS This print is from the Jane Harris collection |
This photo was special to Jane and is special
to me. As we all know, Jane loved
birds and she also incorporated birds into her many media of artwork. It was Jane who suggested that I display a
larger print of this image in the first BRADICA Exhibit two years ago. This photograph is a composite that I put
together using two separate images; sky and the gull. It was a challenge due to the fact that in
order to make it believable, the sky needed to show through the
semi-transparent feathers near the bird’s wing tips. In any event, I was able to accomplish the
effect I desired. Jane liked this image so much, that it was my pleasure to
gift this print to her. Naturally this
particular print is not for sale, but other prints are available upon
request. |
