TEXT: Shaffer, D. R. (2005 or 2009). Social and personality development, 5th or 6th ed., Belmont, CA: Thompson-Wadsworth.

OBJECTIVES: This course will provide students with an overview of theories and research on the social-emotional side of human development, with a focus on the years of infancy through adolescence.  The knowledge gained in the course will help students to understand the social processes involved in their own personal development and that of those around them.

REQUIREMENTS:

(a)     EXAMS: Three regular exams plus an optional cumulative final exam. Students who miss a regular exam must take the cumulative final exam. No make-up exams will be given. Students who complete the regular exams, but wish to improve their grades, may take the cumulative final exam, and substitute the final exam grade for their lowest regular exam grade.  Exams are worth 95% of your final grade.

(b)    SUMMARY: One summary of a recent (5 years or less) empirical research article (not a review or brief report) related to the course content.  The article must be from a peer-reviewed developmental psychology journal, such as Child Development, Developmental Psychology, or Social Development. (See website for instructions to access these journals online).

The summary should include an overview of the Background, Method, Results, and Implications of the study, along with a Personal Evaluation of the article.  The summary should be 1 typewritten page, and must include a copy of the article.  The summary must be written in your own words!  The summary will count for 5% of your final grade.

(c)     EXTRA CREDIT: Students may earn up to 3 extra points on their final course grades by (a) submitting up to three additional article summaries, following the above guidelines, or (b) participating in research projects, if available, (1 pt. each hour).  See http://fiu.sona-systems.com/ for research participation opportunities.  (You may need to unblock messages in your spam filter from psyexp@fiu.edu to receive messages from this system).
