Chapter 3: The Importance of Listening A Key to Successful Jazz Education
by J. Richard Dunscomb

Director's Checklist For Listening
Simply put, if you don't hear it, you won't be able to teach it!

Prioritize time for jazz listening. Think jazz vocabulary and aural skills!
Use the demo recording included with many published arrangements.
Make tape copies of these demo recordings for the students (for educational purposes only and not for any other use).
Set listening goals for yourself and for your students—realistic and attainable.
Have a recording playing when students arrive in class. Set the standard and the mind for jazz.
Identify a model or example recording to study and analyze. Listen repeatedly.
Create a library for students to check out recordings and encourage them to purchase/exchange their own jazz CDs.
Post a suggested jazz listening list and update it regularly. Assign listening homework for extra credit.
As often as possible, listen to live musical performances. It is sometimes difficult to perceive dynamics of great jazz artists listening to recordings. Live performances provide overall reception that is auditory as well as visual; this adds considerably to listening experiences.
Early listening techniques may include identifying the melody. Attempt to sing along. If melodies are too complicated, as many are on an initial listening, try to identify with another aspect (for example, rhythm, dynamics) that may be of interest or accessible to the students.
Seek recommendations for listening live or recorded music from respected mature musicians.
Listen with the goal of being able to identify some musical aspects such as motif, riff, rhythm, melody, harmony, style, tempo, instrumentation, feel, nuances, solos, key players, and the rhythm section.

Chapter 15: Selecting Music For Grade 3
Advanced middle school, junior high, and/or easy high school

Grade 3 is a great level to encourage and emphasize "swing and shuffle" styles. This is a very special level because it's where most directors at the high school level begin to have a chance to share the joy of jazz music with their students. With younger high school and middle school students we can certainly use music they know as a starter to get them comfortable and then introduce them to the jazz concepts. Music used for that purpose should include shuffle, an excellent bridge, since students at this age hear it often on TV and radio. Obviously funk, rock, and Latin can fill a similar bill in bringing the student into jazz. This is also a great time to use ballads, particularly ones for which you have the words. The students are ready to understand how they can convert the phrasing of lyrics into instrumental phrasing.

Style Categories
The following charts are sorted into four basic categories within each grade level:

Swing/shuffle
Ballad
Latin/rock
Special
They are designated as:
Jazz Ensemble Classics These are arrangements of recognized jazz standards, or arrangements of outstanding original compositions for big band that have proven to be timeless.
Other Suggested Arrangements
These are not necessarily jazz standards, but they will make outstanding additions to any program.
