Course Objective: Inference, in the form of estimations, decisions, and predictions, plays a vital role in everyday life as well as in organized research. In many cases, a knowledge of statistics will allow a quantitative assessment of the risk involved with each inference, and hence, improve a basic knowledge of inference making procedures for undergraduates with diverse academic backgrounds.
Exams: Three class Exams (100 points each) and a Cumulative Final Exam (200 points) will be given on the following dates:
Exam I - Tuesday, February 5, 2013
Exam II - Thursday, March 7, 2013
Exam III - Tuesday, April 16, 2013
Cumulative Final Exam:
Thursday, April 25, 2013 - 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Exam Policy: *Students must bring a photo I.D. for each exam
*Students may use only standard, scientific, or graphing calculators. NO CELL PHONES may be used as calculators.
*If a student’s phone rings, beeps, vibrates, etc. during an exam, I reserve the right to collect the student’s exam immediately.
*Once a student begins taking an exam, the student may not leave the classroom until turning in the exam; i.e., you may not leave the room and return to continue working on the exam.
**Any student who does not take an exam at the scheduled time without PRIOR CONSENT of the instructor will receive a grade of ZERO on that exam. If you feel you have a LEGITIMATE excuse for missing an exam, you must contact me via e-mail or leave a message on my voicemail PRIOR to the exam. If I agree your reason is legitimate, your final exam grade will count twice (20% for missed exam and 40% for final exam grade).
Grading: Your final grade in the course will be determined by the total number of points earned throughout the semester of 500 possible points. At the end of the semester, take your total number of points earned and divide by 5 to get your average. Below is the minimum average needed for the following grades;
A: 90 A-: 87 B+: 84 B: 80 B-: 77 C+: 74 C: 70 C-: 67 D+: 64 D: 60 D-: 57 F: below 57
Homework: Homework problems assigned from the text. Although solutions to these problems will not be collected, it is strongly recommended that you work at least the problems assigned in order to assist you in understanding the content of the course. If you have difficulties with these problems, you should work additional problems involving the same content. **Do not work the problems with the sole objective of obtaining the correct numerical answer. Rather, work the problems in order to understand the conclusions in the context of the individual problem. This will help you to see the meaning and relevance of the procedures we will discuss.
Attendance:Attendance is not required but certainly advised. Students are responsible for everything covered during the class period, including material discussed as well as any handouts, notification of changes in exam dates, homework assignments and any other announcements.
Problems: I encourage you to contact me as soon as any problems arise that may affect your performance in the course, whether they are academic or personal. Do not wait until the end of the semester to discuss problems that arose weeks prior. I am committed to do everything I can to help you do your best in the course, however, remember the responsibility is yours.
