CRITICAL SUMMARIES

Model Critical Summary

Agre P. The Aquaporin Water Channels

Agre, P. and Kozono, D. (2003). Aquaporin water channels: molecular mechanisms for human diseases. FEBS Lett 555, 72-78.

Preston GM, Carroll TP, Guggino WB, Agre P (1992). Appearance of water channels in Xenopus oocytes expressing red cell CHIP28 protein. Science 256 (5055): 385–387.

The first two reviews are useful for background but do not critique them.

Write a critical summary of Preston et al. (1992) and one other paper from the primary literature of your choosing.

3-5 Sep NO CLASS - thank the workers of America.

10-12 Sep

Protein trafficking and endocytosis

Markham MR, McAnelly ML, Stoddard PK, Zakon HH (2009) Circadian and social cues regulate ion channel trafficking. PLoS Biology 7(9), e1000203.

Critical summary of Markham et al. (2009), AND explain its connection to the work of Randy W. Schekman, Thomas C. Südhof or James E. Rothman, 3 cell biologists who won the 2013 Nobel Prize for their studies of molecular trafficking

17-19 Sep

Protein folding and conformation -
mechanism underlying infectious proteins.

Pan KM, Baldwin M, Nguyen J, Gasset M, Serban A, Groth D, Mehlhorn I, Huang Z, Fletterick RJ, Cohen FE, Mehlhorn I, Huang Z, Fletterick RJ, Cohenu FE, Prusiner SB. 1993. Conversion of alpha-helices into beta-sheets features in the formation of the scrapie prion proteins. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 90, 10962-10966.

Critical summary of Pan et al. (1993) and one other paper from the primary literature on same topic.

(Pan et al. is a bit chewey but important – Stanley Prusiner's work was awarded the Nobel Prize)

24-26 Sep Ubiquitin system & Autophagy Kim PK, Hailey DW, Mullen RT, Lippincott-Schwartz J. (2008) Ubiquitin signals autophagic degradation of cytosolic proteins and peroxisomes. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 105:20567-74 Critical summary of Kim et al. (2008).
1-3 Oct Nuclear pores

Patel SS, Belmont BJ, Sante JM, Rexach MF (2007) Natively unfolded nucleoporins gate protein diffusion across the nuclear pore complex. Cell 129:83-96

Critical summary of Patel et al. (2007).
8-10 Oct Surprising roles of the humble nucleolus

Leslie M (2014) Central command. Science
345: 506-507.

Rubbi CP1, Milner J (2003) Disruption of the nucleolus mediates stabilization of p53 in response to DNA damage and other stresses. EMBO J. 22:6068-77.

Leslie (2014) is background.

Critique Rubbi & Milner (2003) and
one other paper from the primary literature on the same subject.

15-17 Oct Motor proteins - molecules that walk

Asbury, C.L., 2005. Kinesin: world's tiniest biped. Curr Opin Cell Biol 17, 89-97.

Yildiz, A., Tomishige, M., Vale, R.D., Selvin, P.R., 2004. Kinesin walks hand-over-hand. Science 303, 676-678.

Critical summary of Yildiz et al. (2004). Make an effort to to understand each of the figures.
22-24 Oct
Mitochondrial reticulum

Glancy B, Hartnell LM, Malide D, Yu ZX, Combs CA, Connelly PS, Subramaniam S, Balaban RS (2015) Mitochondrial reticulum for cellular energy distribution in muscle. Nature, 523, 617-20. 10.1038/nature14614

Read cool but difficult paper. Read cursorally and create a glossary of terms and abbreviations. Read the paper again, slowly and carefully, as many times as you need to understand every figure. Write a critical summary (submit glossary and crit summary together to Turnitin).

29-31 Oct
Cytoskeleton: role in cell motility Yang C, Hoelzle M, Disanza A, Scita G, Svitkina T (2009) Coordination of membrane and actin cytoskeleton dynamics during filopodia protrusion. PLoS ONE 4(5): e5678. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0005678 Critical summary of Yang et al. (2009)
5-7 Nov Insulin signaling: resveratrol and lifespan

Baur  J and 26 other authors (2006). Resveratrol improves health and survival of mice on a high- calorie diet. Nature. 444:337-342.

Critical summary of Baur et al. (2006) a paper which illustrates the term "et al."
Find a more recent paper from primary literature and address its findings as well.
12-14 Nov NO CLASS - thank a veteran.
19-21 Nov
Cell cycle

Epel ES, Blackburn EH, Lin J, Dhabhar FS, Adler NE, Morrow JD, Cawthon RM (2004) Accelerated telomere shortening in response to life stress.  PNAS 101 (49) 17312-17315

Critical summary of Epel et al. (2004) and one more recent paper of your choosing from the primary literature on telomeres.

26-28 Nov The cell cycle matters Ma, H., Marti-Gutierrez, N., Park, S.-W., Wu, J., Lee, Y., Suzuki, K., Koski, A., Ji, D., Hayama, T., Ahmed, R., Darby, H., Van Dyken, C., Li, Y., Kang, E., Park, A. Read this mongo review paper just through page 657, column 1.
Take notes on what you learn and new terms. Submit to Turnitin. Your notes should come to at least 5 pages, single-spaced. Outline format is smart but not obligatory. You can read the rest of the paper if you like.
