Mathematical Techniques of Operations Research

Prerequisites: MAC 2311,12,13 (Calculus I, II, III), and MAS 3105 (Linear Algebra).

Textbooks:  The course material will come from several books; however the books: Mathematical Programming for Economics and Business, by Pfaffenberger and Walker,QA402.5 P46 and Introduction to Operations Research, by Hillier and Lieberman, Q175. H47 may serve as guides. Those books are on reserve at the Green Library for you to consult. The material to be covered includes: linear programming(modeling, graphical method, duality method, simplex method, integer programming, some nonlinear programing), nonlinear programming(convex functions and sets, quadratic programming, convex programming). But before starting with the stated material, you will be refreshed on some calculus elements that will be useful later on.

Evaluation:
- Three tests during the term (due dates: Wednesday February 08; Wednesday March 08; Wednesday April 12)
- Final Exam (Wednesday April 26, 9:00am-2:00pm)

 The three tests are home tests and will make up 60% of the course grade.  Each test will be posted on the course website about ten days before the due date. It is important that you do and write up the test yourself; this will help you with your writing skills and also to better understand the concepts involved. Be sure to submit a clean write-up of the test; I advise you to write down a first draft of a problem solution, and if you're satisfied, to rewrite it neatly. If two tests are verbantim copies of each other, the tests will be void, and the concerned students will have to write a proctored four-hour test.  The final exam will be worth 40%.  For those students who took the three tests, and turned them in on time, we will also use the alternate grading scheme: Tests 40%, and Final exam 60% whichever produces the highest grade.
No late tests will be collected; a zero will be recorded for any late test. Remember: Commitment+Responsibility=Success.

Important Dates:

March 19 is the last date to drop the course with a DR  grade. It is of a great importance that you accurately assess your course performance prior to this date.
MLK Day: Monday January 16: University closed. Spring Break: March 13-18: University closed.
