Utiga Ichkeul National Park. The natural preserve at Ichkeul Lake (50 km north of Tunis) is an ecomuseum classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The park is home to thousands of migrating birds, wild boars, jackals, and water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). Depending on the narrative, the buffaloes are descendents from herds present during Carthaginian times, or are descendents from a pair given to the Bey of Tunis by the King of Sicily in 1729. Ahmed Bey (1837-1855) released more of these Asian buffaloes into the wilderness of Ichkeul when they proved useless to carry around his artillery. According to the guide "Footprint Tunisia Handbook" by Justin McGuinness (2002) "when the French took over in 1881, there were over 1,000 of these beasts at Ichkeul, who presumably found the seasonal marches like the rice-paddies of their homeland... In the Second World War, American troops stationed in the area nearly wiped out the herd in search of fresh meat". Its marches were ideal to reproduce a mock-up Japanese village for the set of the movie Madame Butterfly (1993).

Mount Ichkeul is home to a Roman outpost in the middle of the forest. According to the Tunisian archaeologist Selma Zayane (Thalassa l'Expédition: escale à Tunis, France 3, 16 Octobre 2009) its quarries were one of the sources for the marble columns of the Carthage of antiquity. Much of the marble was transported on flat-bottomed barges still in evidence in mosaics found in Sicily and elsewhere. In the 13th century, the Hafside dynasty used Ichkeul as a hunting ground, much like the beys who ruled in the centuries that followed. Mount Ichkeul sits at the center of many not-too-distant Lybico-Phoenician, Numidian, Byzantine, Roman, Arab and Ottoman settlements: Utica, the oldest Punic town in North Africa (ancient Atiga), Hippo Zarrytus (Bizerte), Porto Farina (Ghar El Melh), Thabraka (Tabarka), Vagga (Beja), Bulla Regia, Simithu (Chemtou), Sicca Veneria (Le Kef, focal point of the War of the Mercenaries of 241 BC), Thugga (Dougga), Thuburbo Majus, Mactaris, Zama (where Scipio defeated Hannibal in 202 BC), etc. Sites in their vicinity are yet to be unearthed at Satfoura and Laribus. Satfoura, for instance, saw a decisive battle pitting the conquering Arabs against the Byzantine troops and their allied irregulars of all races, most notably Berbers and Vandals, between 697 AD date of the fall of Carthage in the hands of Abu al-Muhajir ibn Dinar, and--after a short reversal--703 AD, date of its final sacking at the hands of Hassan ibn al-Numan al-Ghassani, etc.

``One should recount the famous twin lakes of Bizerta in Ifriqiya. The first is saline, the other runs on fresh water. During winter, the freshwater lake [Ichkeul] flows into the saline [Lac de Bizerte] yet changes nothing of its salinity. This then ceases, and it is the role of the saline one to dump its waters into the freshwater lake for the next six months, that is until the end of the cycle. None of its salt content affects the freshwater lake. The [saline] lake is famous for its fish. At the head of every lunar month a new kind of fish swims its waters then disappears only to appear a year later. Thus spoke the people of the Maghreb! Glory unto Him who hath dominion over all things!'' (From "Masalik al-Absar fi Mamalik al-Amsar" by Damascene historian Shihab al-Din Ahmad Ibn Fadlallah al-Umari, AD 1301-1349)
