About the Song

Demon Huanted World (J. Webb, M. Wood, B. Fernandez) –This song is about the battle between science and pseudoscience. Written with Carl Sagan’s famous book The Demon Haunted World in mind, and with verses which parallel some of the chapters of his book, this song is dark, written in a minor key, and espouses despair at the general trend seen throughout the ages to put faith in “charlatans and thieves” above using “reason and logic” to solve the problems at hand. The verses in the song follow some of the chapters of the book. For instance, verse one is reminiscent of chapter 12: The Fine Art of Baloney Detection. Verse 2 corresponds to chapter 14 and discusses the dangers of anti-science and religious doctrines like Creationism being treated in the same way as true scientific theories such as Evolution. Regardless of how one would like to think the species came about, the evidence points to Evolution as the only viable theory. Creationism is not based on evidence, but preconceptions based on religious beliefs. The song also addresses things like ESP and fortune telling which has absolutely no scientific value, but is commonly found in popular books in bookstores and on TV shows. My own experience with a History channel show, The UFO Hunters, proved what I knew all along. Those shows ignore or openly suppress science, so they can argue their assumption: Aliens exist and have visited Earth. I was asked to provide a detailed, rigorous scientific analysis of an event presented in one of their shows. Although I was able, through scientific analysis, to show everything was explainable with normal physics, not evoking supernatural, alien or otherwise strange happenings, none of my analysis made the show. In fact I was on air for about 10 seconds, but not saying any of the interesting or explanatory things I had figured out about the event. No one saw the science, only the fiction! Very sad indictment of modern day television.

Lyrics

In a demon-haunted World science is the candle that lights our way in the dark In a demon haunted world science is the path that sets humans apart In a demon-haunted world demons are people who tell you what you want to hear In a demon haunted the demons aren’t monsters but blind superstition and fear

chorus How can we live in a world that’s filled with charlatans and thieves Who lie and cheat and mislead those who can’t see the forest from the trees Help we need help to chase the demons away Help, we need help for the dawning of a brand new day

In a demon-haunted world you can call on a psychic to tell you what your future will be. In a demon-haunted world you give them your money and they show you what you want to see In a demon–haunted world a state of the world can legislate our history away In a demon-haunted world the theory of creationism gains support by the day.

chorus Reason and logic can you save us from beliefs that are totally absurd Science and learning can you save us from the Demon Haunted world Help we need help to chase the demons away Help, we need help for the dawning of a brand new day
