About the Song
Reaching for the Stars (J. Webb) -A personal plea written after seeing the destruction of the twin towers on 9/11 for humanity to use our intelligence and technology to study our universe instead of using it to destroy each other. I woke up one morning with the lyrics and the tune running through my head and sat down and wrote this song. There are enough cosmic dangers out there without making the universe any more dangerous by our actions against each other here on Earth (Blowing up buildings and cars). It seems we can justify all types of violence in the name of religion if you try hard enough, and there are lots of people who manage that feat. Going back to the crusades, through countless wars, to present day Apollo 11, were actually on the surface of another world for the first time in human history. We were reaching for the stars, watching rockets blast off, taking our dreams and hopes out into the universe, just a small step for a species, but a giant leap toward becoming a cosmic presence. Unfortunately, after that spectacular success, and a series of similar missions, humans haven’t been back to the Moon or anywhere else. The budget cuts for NASA continues to strangle any hope of gaining cosmic citizenship. We have regressed, perhaps dangerously, to the point where we are unable to really be cosmic citizens any longer. My TEDxFIU talk pointed out that we are at a crossroads in our evolution as a society. Now young scientists cannot look forward to working on adventurous space flights, but to building bombs and weapons to kill other people, or to play video games. We really should be reaching for the stars, since that represents progress. We should be striving to be organisms with promise in the universe, not just one planet wonders!

Lyrics
chorus
We should be reaching for the stars, instead of blowing up buildings and cars
We should be watching rockets rise up to the sky, instead of watching innocent people die
Looking back to the nature of life, evolution had its place in strife
Survival and natural selection brought us this close to perfection
chorus
We should be learning how nature works, instead of learning how to destroy our own works
We should be exploring the vast universe, instead of justifying hate by holy verse
Looking out into space and time, the universe is a dangerous place we find
Why do humans make it so much worse, we’re all citizens of the same universe
chorus
We should be learning how nature works, instead of learning how to destroy our own works
We should be exploring the vast universe, instead of justifying hate by holy verse
chorus
We should be reaching for the stars, instead of blowing up buildings and cars
We should be watching rockets rise up to the sky, instead of watching innocent people die
With brains and logic we can go past this place, past fundamental hate, predijuce and hate
And join each other to look up into the sky, and weave a plan so no one has to die
chorus
We should be reaching for the stars, instead of blowing up buildings and cars
We should be watching rockets rise up to the sky, instead of watching innocent people die
We should be reaching for the stars, instead of blowing up buildings and cars
We should be watching rockets rise up to the sky, instead of watching innocent people die
