Prof. Xiao’s research directions cover multiple fields including biosensors, nanomaterials, and biotechnology. Dr. Xiao obtained her Ph.D. from Nanjing University, China. Her Ph.D. work with Prof. Hongyuan Chen and Prof. Huangxian Ju focused on gold nanoparticle based biosensors for the detection of the activity of enzymes. Her first postdoctoral appointment in Professor Itamar Willner’s group (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel) was exceptionally productive. Her work in electronic glucose biosensors using nanoparticles as an electron transfer media was a marker of her innovative and original research work. She moved to UCSB in 2004 for her second postdoctoral position advised by Prof. Alan Heeger and Prof. Kevin Plaxco. At UCSB, she expended her work into biomedical diagnostics by developing label-free electronic biosensors that function effectively in complex mixtures such as serum and cell lysates. In 2007, she worked as a Research Faculty at Prof. Tom Soh’s laboratory at UCSB. During four years of research, she has made a number of extraordinary breakthroughs in critical areas of biotechnology such as “in vitro Directed Evolution” and “on chip DNA and small molecules detections”, resulted in 25 journal articles within 4 years. In August 2011, she started her new job at FIU as assistant Professor in Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her group is planning to use biotechnologies, biomaterials and nanomaterials to develop sensitive, robust and disposable biosensors for point-of-care or on-site applications.
