A Competitive Program for Talented Students

"PHRII works to provide inexpensive and quality reproductive health services for low-income women in the underserved city of Mysore and its surrounding villages. Having the opportunity to work with these underserved communities shaped my motivation to become a Physician Assistant; one that provides quality care regardless of the nature of the population, the setting or culture."

~ Rosalie Garcia, 2017 GHSA Cohort

Applicants to the FIU GHSA Program will be selected on a rolling basis; this means that each application will be reviewed upon receipt and a decision will be made within two weeks of that time. This is to ensure that Dr. Stephens has time to get to know the students and assist them with applying for scholarships, research awards, and other opportunities that require early submissions. For these reasons, it is better to apply early rather than waiting for the November 1st deadline. Once eight students have been selected by this date, all other applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Students can start applying for this program August 1, 2021. At the time of application, all study abroad applicants are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above (minimum to be considered for a quality graduate or medical school); students with lower GPAs will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Submit Department of Psychology Global Health Program Application (see below); incomplete applications will not be considered
  • Commit to completing all program academic, administrative, medical, and financial requirements.

Applicants attending other Institutions

Students who do not attend FIU are welcome to participate in the program. In fact, students often find it is less expensive due to FIU's low tuition. In addition to completing both applications by the deadline, external applications should contact the FIU Education Abroad Office directly to find out what steps must be taken to apply to the GHSA program.

If you have any other questions during the application process, visit the FAQs page on this website.

Applications

Applying to the GHSA Program

The application process involves three steps. The most important for ensuring you have an interview scheduled is the Psychology Department Online Application.

1. Psychology Department Online Application

Applicants must completed the Department of Psychology Online Application; this becomes available in August. This is a detailed application that focuses on your interests in global health, study abroad and research. It must be filled out prior to the application deadline as it will be used to determine the first round of applicants selected to be interviewed and selected. To complete the Department of Psychology's required Global Health Study Abroad Program online application, simply click here.

2. Office of Education Abroad Online Application

The second application is for the FIU Office of Education Abroad (OEA); this becomes available in October. This application is to ensure that you a have completed university required forms, have an official emergency contact on record, and that key academic/ legal matters are addressed. To earn credit for coursework completed abroad, students must complete this application before the first payment is due. The required OEA online application can be found by clicking here.

3. Applicant Interview

All students will be interviewed by the Director of the Program, Dr. Stephens, and possibly one other alumnus of the program. The goal of this interview is to ensure that students have the emotional stability and maturity for the program and graduate level studies. Students must indicate the ability to lead a stable, responsible, and healthy life abroad as a representative of FIU and the United States. This interview takes place approximately two weeks after your Department of Psychology Online Application has been completed. All students are strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic Advisor in their major to go over how these courses fit within their overall degree plan.
