  View from the Byrsa
Hill: Ancient Harbors of
Carthage,
with the two-horned mountain of
Balcaranensis (Bougarnin), site
of the ancient sanctuary of Saturn Balcaranensis
(or Saturnus Baal Qarmain), watching over the city across the bay. Maxula-Radès
is at the base of the mountain and the ancient Nepheris, site of a major battle between Romans and
Carthaginians during the Third Punic War, discovered by Father Delattre
in June 1889, is further behind at the base of Jabal Rasas. The temple of Saturn Balcaranensis was
discovered by Jules Toutain in 1892. The Phoenician Baal Qarmain
("Lord of the two-horns"), worshipped by Carthaginians, is
identified with Baal Melkarth ("Lord King of the Land"), and "Baal Hammon"
("Lord of Mt. Amanus"), identified with the Greek Cronus (who eats his
children according to Greek mythology), and the Roman Saturn.
