Exams

We will administer three midterm exams and one final exam. Each midterm is worth 20% of your grade and the final is worth 25%. Each exam will be graded and returned to you a week or so after the exam is administered. During the exam you are allowed to bring the following:

    • A calculator
    • Writing devices, pencil or pen
  • A formula sheet, one 8.5” x 11” page, will be provided to you during the exam.

Each student will be assigned a seat during the exam and you will asked to place your belongings except for the items above, at the front of the class. This includes smart phones or watches. To save time please place these in your backpacks before coming to class. Also, students will not be allowed to leave the class room during the exam unless there is an urgent medical emergency.

A proctor will be available to you to help clarify the problems or answer a limited set of questions during each exams.

Exam Materials

Information about exams are linked from this page. You’ll find solutions to previous exams, distribution of grades, and student grades so far in the course. Also, linked are previous exams I’ve administered in similar classes I’ve taught, sorry this the first time I’ve taught 2048 so I do not have old exams to share. However, this is not really necessary given that my exam questions come from lecture notes, homework problems and EOC exercises. PLEASE NOTE that I do have not looked at my former exams in quite some time so there may be issues with the accuracy of solutions or issues with the old exams on my sample old exams, no guaranties…

Suggestions for effective test taking:
    1. Study all of the material covered in class, carefully read and understand the corresponding sections in the book and most definitely do the problems assigned as homework. Exam questions are taken from the EOC problems, examples worked in class or in the book and made up by me from the material we discussed. I typically cover every section in a chapter unless otherwise stated in class.
    1. Write down all of your work and label everything. Partial credit is given so it is in your interest to add details and write clearly.
    1. Do as many problems as you can the exam. The exams are designed to keep the best students busy the entire test period. So don’t be too concerned if you don’t finish every problem.
  1. Since problems typically have the same weight I recommend that you first quickly scan through and attempt those problems you know how to solve.
