Moving Beyond the Machismo: Expanding the Lens Of Latino Gender Identity in Sexual Health Research
September 18, 2019Much of the research examining Latino sexual health draws upon stereotypic frameworks of machismo, an American defined framework of sexuality. This talk focused on stereotypes of Latino masculinity and its influence sexual health research processes. I discussed research exploring college Latinos' varied sexual health experiences and their application to cultural frameworks of masculinity . -
Introduction to Qualitative Methods In Global Health Research
June 28- 30, 2019This workshop provided Fogarty Global Health Scholars with an overview of qualitative methodology. We discuss when to use qualitative methods, how to define a study sample, and the difference between qualitative and quantitative research methods. We also engaged in coding and analyzing qualitative data by hand, and we covered some of the different computer applications available for data analysis -
Culturally Responsive Engagement with Students in MiamI's Resource Limited Schools
May 18, 2019This workshop focused on the socio historical realities that shape the experiences of children living in Miami's resource limited communities. The influence of systemic racism on social, political and educational systems teachers must engage children in was explored via interactive exercises. -

January 17, 2019I was awarded the Mid Career Shining Star Award for my demonstrated a commitment to multicultural research, teaching, and advocacy. The ceremony for this award was held during the APA's National Multicultural Conference and Summit. -
Beasts of Burden: The Animalization Of Black Women's Bodies in Sexual Health Research
November 16, 2018Using a Reproductive Justice lens, this lecture highlights ways in which Black women’s bodies have been dehumanized across sexual health research contexts. Drawing upon the literature examining the use of animals for research, breeding, show, and sport, the ways these actions have been applied to perceptions of Black women’s sexual health outcomes was discussed.
