MIAMI STUDIES FELLOWSHIP
May 2021 through May 2022As part of a grant generously funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to build a robust Miami Studies Program at Florida International University's Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab (WPHL), eight full-time FIU faculty were selected for the first cohort of Miami Studies Fellows. This collective of interdisciplinary scholars from across the university will contribute to the development of curriculum in that integrates local and community studies into the research and teaching foci. -
Baahubali: Using an epic Sci Fi film to expand Western discussions of Indian Womanhoods
December 9, 2020I was an invited plenary speaker for Bangalore University's International Conference titled " All Road Leads to Science Fiction". Focusing on Baahubali, an epic two-part Indian saga that broke global box office records, this presentation addressed the ways in which gaps American medias' presentation of culturally diverse Indian womanhoods can be explored through this film. The global impact due to use of the sci fi genre was critical to its success and impact. -
Psychological Aggression in Adult Women’s Relationships: Beyond Socio Economic Status & AGE Myths
November 19, 2020People typically do not picture middle class or mature adult women when discussing domestic violence. This talk will focus on the most common but most overlooked form of abuse- psychological aggression- and the unique factors that put middle class, mature adult women at risk. Further, we will discuss how to identify signs and solutions to support friends and co- workers experiencing this form of abuse. -

AFFIRMING YOUTH'S PROJECT ACES GRANT
April 13, 2021The United States Office of Minority Health is funding Affirming YOUth's Project ACES (Affirming Children through Economic Stability). It will serve low-income working families disproportionately at risk for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the greater Liberty City community in Miami, FL. This initiative seeks to determine whether the implementation of earned income tax credit (EITC) outreach and education activities in communities at higher risk for ACEs can result in increased EITC receipt and changes in risk and/or protective factors for ACEs.
